Riding Off Into the Sunset: Vicky Overstreet Retires After 40 Years

After forty years in the bus world, longtime Sonny Merryman Sales Administrator Vicky Overstreet is officially riding off into the sunset.

Vicky’s journey with Sonny Merryman began back in 1985, when she was hired to provide administrative and clerical support for the company’s growing bus business. At the time, she was one of just a handful of employees. Today, the company is home to a workforce of more than 175. She received her early training directly from the Merryman family – Sonny, Lou, Pat, and Floyd. Her persistence, drive to learn, and hands-on experience quickly became the foundation of her long and successful career.

In those early days, Vicky’s responsibilities were whatever needed to be done at the moment — from answering the phone (when Sonny didn’t get to it first!) to preparing bus bids, invoices, sales and warranty documents, and processing mail. She truly did it all – even recording shorthand from Floyd’s dictation!

As the years passed, Vicky’s responsibilities grew alongside the company. Adapting to modern technology posed a challenge, both personally and professionally, but she embraced it as an opportunity for growth. “Sonny never warmed up to computer technology, but he sure expected us to!” says Vicky with a smile.

Vicky is perhaps best known at the company as the vehicle delivery coordinator — a role that’s as complex as it is critical. Delivering a single bus requires razor-sharp organizational skills and, at times, the agility of a carnival juggler. Coordinating directly with the factory, sales and service teams, drivers, and customers, she kept every piece in motion. “You must be prepared for the unexpected when it comes to a delivery,” says Vicky. “It is oftentimes a bit tricky. Multiple changes can take place in only a matter of minutes. You must be able to adapt and pivot on the spot.” Over the years, Vicky successfully coordinated the delivery of tens of thousands of buses — an extraordinary achievement by any measure.

She reflects fondly on her time with Sonny Merryman. Her relationships with colleagues and customers over the past four decades hold a special place in her heart — especially her team of loyal delivery drivers. She’s also proud of the company’s remarkable growth and many shared accomplishments. “In 1989, Sonny Merryman was named Thomas Built Buses Dealer of the Year. We were all absolutely thrilled! We have earned the award six more times since then. It is very gratifying to be a part of a nationally acclaimed company,” says a beaming Vicky.

“I’ll miss the people the most,” says Vicky. “What success I have enjoyed is directly

attributable to the support I have received from so many. I am grateful to the Merryman family for this opportunity of my lifetime.”

In retirement, Vicky plans to spend more time with her grandson, Marvin, and care for her many beloved critters. Yes, she’s riding off into the sunset — not on a bus, but in a saddle atop one of her treasured horses.

Thank you, Vicky, for your incredible contributions to Team Sonny. We will miss you immensely and wish you all the joy and happiness you so richly deserve. Happy trails!
